Detroit Pistons surprise Slow Rollers
DETROIT (WJBK) - The Pistons will begin their regular season next week in Atlanta. This week? They were rolling around the city on two wheels. Head coach Stan Van Gundy and other plays dropped in on Slow Roll Detroit Monday night.
"It's a great event. The turnouts been great the past couple years it's been going on," says Pistons Center Andre Drummons. "In terms of how long we're riding, I'm not sure. As long as Stan Van Gundy can ride is how long we're going to ride."
"[Slow Roll Detroit] is just a bike ride where the community gets together and it's great for us to be a part of it, to be down here in the city with our fans, with the people, supporting them like they support us," Van Gundy says.
Every Monday April-October, three to four thousand of these slow rollers meet to ride bikes 10 miles through the streets of Detroit. Eastern Market - Shed 2 was Monday's meet up spot.
"We started this thing as a small collective, and to be recognize by somebody like the Detroit Pistons - and to actually have them ride the ride - the people are pumped right now. The energy is out the roof," says Jason Hall, a co-founder of Slow Roll Detroit.
For some of the Pistons players, it had been a little while since they'd been on two wheels. Spencer Dinwiddie, a guard, tells FOX 2's Jennifer Hammond he thinks the last time he was on a bike was high school. Andre Drummond thinks it was middle school for him.
"For me, dang. It's probably been a couple years, so hopefully it's how the saying goes. You hop back on a bike, hopefully it's easy for me," says guard Reggie Jackson.
The next Slow Roll Detroit ride is also a Halloween party, and the last ride for the season. It's next Monday, Oct. 26. The meet up spot is The Fillmore on Woodward Avenue.
