Detroit pitbull recovering after owner admits to stabbing on Facebook Live

A dog is recovering in a shelter after being stabbed multiple times by its owner.

Dig deeper:

The pitbull, pictured below, was fighting for its life after its owner went on Facebook Live and admitted to stabbing the dog because it went after their cat.

The owner, whose identity FOX 2 will not reveal as they have not been charged, turned the camera to the dog, covered in blood and said the following:

"Tried to kill my cat—and then, I was just trying to protect my cat," said the dog owner said on Facebook Live.

People who saw the disturbing video on social media quickly started investigating, which led Detroit Animal Care and Control to a home on Manning on Detroit's east side.

"There was a dog that was severely injured at the house. There were three dogs and four cats," said Crystal Perkins of the General Services Department.

What they're saying:

Detroit Animal Care and Control says all the animals were malnourished. The owner had just adopted the pitbull from Detroit Animal Care and Control in June and had just adopted this puppy from DACC over the holidays.

DACC removed all the animals from the home, including the cat that had been hurt by the dog. Both received extensive medical treatment.

"Extensive stab wounds on the dog—it's just heartbreaking that people would be so cruel to animals," said Perkins.

Chantal Rzewnicki is co-founder of the Karens Dog Rescue and saw the Facebook Live.

"It's heart-wrenching, there's no words to describe what that was to physically see that," said Rzewnicki. "The dog did go after a cat, but let me tell you—the dog's not that big—there are many other ways that you could have went about it rather than stab your dog and then to go live on Facebook and ask your dog why did you make me do this?"

What's next:

FOX 2 was told all of this is still under investigation. As for that dog, once she heals, hopefully, she will find a safe forever home.

"Hopefully we can get a loving family that will love her through her trauma," said a Perkins.
