Detroit Police Department relaunches musical group, Blue Pigs

The Detroit Police Department is going old-school and bringing back the police musical group The Blue Pigs.

After two months of practice, their big relaunch concert took place Halloween night at the 11th Precinct.

"Blue Pigs has been around since 1969," says vocalist retired Sgt. Michael Sanders. "Most of the guys in the band now have been Blue Pigs at some time or another, and the chief decided to put us together again."

Now, the group is kicking off their Ticket to Success tour.

"Our mission is to go into the schools and spread a little understanding about what we do, using music," Sanders says. "I remember when I got on the police department, I'd ride by and kids would wave. And we want to bring that back."

Sanders says they get their groove by infusing some Motown sound into today's popular music.

DPD is also planning to launch a second musical group this year, Blue Swag. This band will feature more hip hop and blues sounds.

Any civilian or retired officer is welcome to join. You'll become a reserve officer with the Detroit Police Department - which means you're a volunteer and won't get paid - so you'll be eligible to join the band.
