Detroit police officer dragged by suspect fleeing traffic stop on east side

A traffic stop escalated into a Detroit police officer getting dragged by the suspect's vehicle Wednesday night.

The police officer, who had been on the passenger side of the car, fired a shot at the suspect, according to DPD. The suspect was believed to have been uninjured, but the suspect drove off.

The police officer was taken to a nearby hospital as a precautionary measure.

What we know:

At 8:10 p.m. officers pulled over a silver Chevrolet Impala.on the 11200 block of Duprey Street, near Casino Avenue.

The officers say they recognized the driver as a known drug offender. After asking him to step out of the car, the driver allegedly refused and rolled up his window.

He then fled, dragging the officer who was at passenger door before he fired a gunshot in self-defense at the suspect.

Detroit police is currently looking for the vehicle and suspect.
