Detroit police officer dragged by suspect, fires shot

A traffic stop on the east side ended dangerously when a police officer was injured by a fleeing suspect and fired a shot in self-defense. The suspect drove off and is believed to have not been hit.

DETROIT (FOX 2) - A traffic stop escalated into a Detroit police officer getting dragged by the suspect's vehicle Wednesday night.

The Brief

    • A Detroit police officer was dragged by a fleeing suspect on the city's east side.
    • The officer fired a shot at the driver, but likely missed as the suspect fled.
    • Detroit police are actively looking for the suspect, last seen in a silver Chevy Impala.

The police officer, who had been on the passenger side of the car, fired a shot at the suspect, according to DPD. The suspect was believed to have been uninjured, but the suspect drove off.

The police officer was taken to a nearby hospital as a precautionary measure.

What we know:

At 8:10 p.m. officers pulled over a silver Chevrolet Impala.on the 11200 block of Duprey Street, near Casino Avenue.

The officers say they recognized the driver as a known drug offender. After asking him to step out of the car, the driver allegedly refused and rolled up his window.

He then fled, dragging the officer who was at passenger door before he fired a gunshot in self-defense at the suspect.

Detroit police is currently looking for the vehicle and suspect.
