Detroit police officer hospitalized after being dragged; passenger turns self in

UPDATE: The second passenger turned himself into police at around 2 p.m. Wednesday, reports Jessica Dupnack.

Late Tuesday night the driver was fleeing police and dragged a Detroit police officer who had been on patrol.

The officer was taken to the hospital while a second individual who was shot by police who opened fire on the vehicle, is in critical condition.

Both the suspect who surrendered to police this afternoon, and the individual who was injured are believed to be part of a gang, police say.

The wild scene unfolded on Detroit's west side shortly before midnight when officers on patrol near Seven Mile and Ashbury Park observed a vehicle backed into a driveway and blocking a sidewalk.

According to Detroit Police Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald, the patrolling officers went to investigate and found two people in the car. They appeared to be tucking something under the seat when police asked them to get out of the car.

They refused before the driver in the car backed into the parked vehicle behind him, then pulled forward and struck a scout car.

As the driver pulled forward and struck the DPD car again, they tried to turn while dragging the officer.

"The driver attempted to turn. He dragged the officer by the vehicle itself. Fearing for their own safety, two officers did fire numerous rounds at the car," said Fitzgerald.

The vehicle was found a few blocks away on Prevost. Nearby, police also found someone with gunshot wounds in their arm and chest. Identified as an 18-year-old, were taken to the hospital.

Police believe the driver of the vehicle is 17 years old. They used a K-9 unit to find the driver, but he was able to flee.
