Detroit's Checker Bar closed after fire

A fire early Tuesday damaged the Checker Bar in Detroit.

Firefighters were called to the bar on Cadillac Square around 4:15 a.m. on reports of a fire in the basement and first floor of the building. Fire crews spent nearly two hours extinguishing the fire and clearing the scene.

According to Checker Bar, the fire started in the electrical room in the basement. Business owners believe an explosion outside the building led to that fire. The Detroit Fire Department is investigating.

The extent of the damage is unknown, but firefighters needed to break the doors to get inside the business.

It's also unclear when Checker Bar will reopen.

"We will keep you updated on the progress of our recovery, and we look forward to welcoming you back as soon as possible," the business wrote on social media.
