Detroit's Roostertail invites married couples back for record-breaking reception
For six decades, newlyweds have celebrated their big day at Detroit's Roostertail. Friday night, they were invited back to mark a major milestone for the popular venue.
"11 months to the day."
"50 years in February."
"11 years."
"46 years. I was born married."
Every couple who attended the party have something in common - they were all married at the Roostertail.
"It was snowing like heck. It was beautiful though. It was really nice," said Patti Buhalis. She and her husband Jim have been married 50 years - tying the knot in February 1968.
"I think we were one of the first ones," said Jim.
Owners Tom and Diane Schoenith are celebrating 60 years of being open and 50 years of marriage too. To celebrate, they invited 200 couples to party with them, for free!
Jacob and Ana Smith couldn't stop smiling and reliving that June day they were married.
"There were such overwhelming feelings of nostalgia when we walked back in together 11 years later," said Ana. "In a room full of strangers, but we have something in common that has such sentimental value."
Some of the couples made a special trip to the spot where it all began. Pam and Bill Treut flew in from New York. They've been married 45 years.
"Interestingly enough, this is where we had our first argument as a married couple. I wanted to stay and Bill wanted to leave!"
This time, it's Pam's night.
"I came early and I'm happy to stay until the last minute."
This story wouldn't be complete without a little advice from these happy couples.
"If you have your spouse's best interest at heart you can't go wrong," said Ana Smith.
"I'm very tolerant," said Patti Buhalis. Her husband Jim's response: "A lot of alcohol."
