DETROIT (WJBK) - The Detroit Public Schools Community District says it will take over Detroit's Education Achievement Authority schools ahead of the start of the next schoolyear.
The 14 schools were taken over by the state in 2011 due to poor scores and an overall underperformance. All schools will be returned to the control of the DPSCD in July of 2017.
"When I first agreed to become the transition manager for the Detroit Public Schools back last March, I did so with a vision. A vision to place this educational institution on a path of excellence, also, on a path of local control. Both of these were extremely imortant to me, and so I put a plan in place to achieve those goals and I stand - or sit - before you today happy to report that this plan is working," says trasition manager Steven Rhodes.
The logistics of the switch are still being worked out, and teachers within the EAA schools may have to reapply for their jobs.
However, authorities believe the switch will being in more students, which will likely mean more opportunity for teachers in the district.
