Eastpointe house fire kills 2, injures 3; family looks for help

EASTPOINTE, Mich. (WJBK) - Flames ripped through an Eastpointe house, killing two people and badly injuring several others Sunday morning.

Losing their lives in the blaze were 61-year-old Margaret Dunnaway and 87 year old Mary Louise Ingram as the fire also killed family dog Moët.

"It's sad to have both of them go together," said Rachel Young, their sister. "They were not by themself."

Young spoke about her younger sister Dunnaway trying get their older sister out of the burning house.

"She ran back to my oldest sister's room to try to help her," Young said. "My oldest sister was unable to walk."

Young says two of Dunaway's sons and a grandson were able to escape. She says her nephews tried to help their mother and aunt get out.

"She heard her son trying to come back in and she screamed 'Don't you dare try to come back in. You get out of this house and stay out of this house.'"

Dunaway's third son was not home at the time but he says he wishes he had been.

"If I had been there I would have got them out," said Ryan Dunnaway.

Family members say there were working smoke detectors inside  but they wish there had been something else.

"Be sure that you have some fire extinguishers," Young said. "Because fire moves fast."

The Red Cross came out Monday to assist the family Monday.

The family set up a GoFundMe to help deal with the financial strain of funeral expenses and finding a new place for surviving family members.

"If they can find it in their heart, we would appreciate it," Young said.
