Father of four killed in driveby shooting on Detroit's west side

A Detroit man was gunned down while sitting in a parked car on the city's west side Wednesday. According to police, the 29-year-old man was sitting in his car when another car pulled up and started firing.

Eric McWilliams was killed Wednesday afternoon when he was sitting in a car on Lothrop. His father, Foster Benson, is at a loss for who would have done it.

"I don't know why anybody [would want to shoot my son]. It might have been something from long ago because that's how people out here think," Benson said.

Police say he was in his car when a second one came up and someone started shooting. His friends tried to rush him to the hospital but by the time McWilliams got there, he was dead. Police don't believe he exchanged shots with the shooter or shooters.

"From the casings that we have are all of the same tyope and appear to be of the same brand. it appears that it was one gun," Detroit Police Capt. Nick Kyriacou said.

Family say McWilliams was the father of four kids, a lifelong Detroiter who played football in high school, went to college but was kicked out and things went bad from there.

"He just got on the wrong side with the wrong people. drugs, everything," Benson said.

Police said they have no motive at this time and they're still trying put the pieces together. They're asking anyone who may have seen anything to come forward or call Crimestoppers.
