Fenton woman killed, five others hospitalized in deadly I-96 crash on New Year's Day
LYON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (FOX 2) - A triple-car crash on I-96 early in the morning of New Year's Day was the cause of one woman's death and five others being seriously injured.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office is not ruling out alcohol as a factor in the deadly incident that happened when a vehicle that rear-ended another parked on I-96 was struck head-on by a third vehicle.
A 57-year-old woman from Fenton was riding as a backseat passenger in a 2016 Ford Explorer when it rear-ended a Chevrolet Trax stopped on westbound I-96 in Lyon Township.
It was just east of the South Hill Road overpass.
The Trax had been stopped in the second lane of the interstate with its hazard lights on. It's unclear why the driver, a 30-year-old Ypsilanti man, had stopped the car.
After the Explorer struck the Trax, it spun around and wound up facing east in the westbound lane of the highway.
A 2018 Jeep Compass then struck the Explorer head-on, killing the Fenton woman.
Both the driver and front-seat passenger of the Explorer are in serious condition, while the 75-year-old driver of the Jeep is in the hospital in critical condition.
So is the 82-year-old husband of the Fenton woman who was killed. It's unclear if the Fenton woman was wearing a seat belt.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Trax was taken to the hospital in stable condition. A blood draw was taken on them and blood results are pending.
The investigation is being carried out by the sheriff's crash reconstruction unit.
