Ferndale, Mich (WJBK) - The now mother of 4 started feeling contractions early Saturday morning, packed and ready to head to the hospital. Dad, thinking they’d make it to Beaumont had to pull over and ask a police officer for help.
"Her head was coming out and the officer was looking like he didn't know what was going on," mom Dyona Alexander said.
She was ready to see the world, and 7 pound 10 ounce Demi Meyers wasn't waiting for anyone.
"By the time we got to 8 miles and Livernois I seen the police had someone pulled over and said stop here they gone have to help me I gotta push," she said.
They had plans of a water birth at Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak but there's some things you just can't plan for.
"Every day is different but never did I think I would be delivering a baby," Ferndale Police Carly Baetens said.
"I have 4 kids at home so that helped a little bit," Ferndale police Scott Blanchard said.
Two Ferndale Police officers were on a traffic stop at 8 Mile and Livernois when Dyona Alexander, her husband and all three of their kids pulled up frantic.
"I didn't know what to do I was in shock," father Dorien Meyers said.
Baby Demi was ready to go.
"I took my vest carrier off and kind of positioned it my vest carrier between me and her in case it shot out, something to catch it," Officer Blanchard
Officer Scott Blanchard stepped into action, ready to deliver the baby right in the passenger seat. He didn't have many supplies but he made it work!
"The head popped out and she kind of relaxed for a minute then I said we have to push and one push and the baby girl came out,” Blanchard said.
Blanchard covered mom and baby with a hazmat suit from their patrol car, an ambulance came and took the mom and baby to Beaumont where they got a visit from the officers who brought flowers and smiles.
"I just want to say thank you to everyone who helped me today," Dyona said.
Dyona, still stunned by the experience, says she's thankful to have her baby girl here perfectly healthy.
"It was a good experience and I will always remember it," she said.
