(FOX 2) - The auto industry continues its march into the future, from autonomous driving to building new plants to manufacture electric car batteries.
Ford has been in lockstep with that march, building up the infrastructure to develop new cars and trucks, as well as the technology that helps run those models.
That includes Blue Cruise, its hands-free driving feature that will steer the car for the driver.
Dig deeper:
Blue Cruise is Ford's driver assistance program that can take over the job of steering, accelerating, and changing lanes in certain areas where it is safe.
Automakers have been trying to strike a balance of building technology that is reliable behind the wheel that drivers are also comfortable with. With Blue Cruise, that includes most of the needs a vehicle has on the highway.
"It is a level two driver assistance system," said Ashley Lambrix. "As the driver, (you) always need to keep your eyes on the road and be prepared to take control. But it gives you the benefit of being able to drive hands-free in blue zones."
It was first introduced in the 2021 Model year Mustang Mach E and F-150.
The latest version can easily change lanes - even picking the right time to shift over.
"I use Blue Cruise everyday," said Lambrix. "Coming to and from the office and on longer drives on the weekend. I have two kids who are soccer players so we spend a lot of time going to tournaments, a lot of time on the highway, and Blue Cruise makes the drive more enjoyable."
By the numbers:
Blue Cruise offers a lot of convenience for drivers ready to let the car take over.
But convenience comes at a price. It's currently available for purchase in five different Ford models: The F-150, Lightning, Expedition, Explorer, and Mach E. Lincoln models also have the option.
The automaker's website lists the tech at 4495 a year or $49.99 a month with a one-time purchase option available on some 2025 model vehicles.
