Former Michigan State University basketball star Keith Appling is in trouble again after his third arrest since May.

Each time Appling was caught with a gun, and now the charges are piling up.

Appling was arraigned on Tuesday after being arrested on Sunday. It started out as a routine traffic stop on Detroit's east side.

But then according to police, a strong odor of marijuana was detected coming from the car.

Police say Appling drove away with the officer's hand in the window and then threw out a duffel bag with a gun inside it.

"He's okay but he's still a young man," said Otis Culpepper, his attorney. "Now he's probably going to get more attention than he reallt would like. But that's the nature of the beast. These young men who have this notoriety don't seem to understand they become lightning rods for trouble."

Appling had already been arrested twice earlier this year on similar charges.

The judge set the bond in this case at $50,000, 10 percent.

"Judge Middleston is very fair," Culpepper said. "The recomendation from the bond office was $10,000, 10 percent but she added in the two (other) cases. I thought that was very fair."
