FOX 2 works for you at Gleaners Community Food Bank

In our community, 1 in 5 children struggles with hunger. That's why FOX 2 teams up with Gleaners Community Food Bank for Double Your Donation Days.

This past weekend, FOX 2 rolled up our sleeves to help fight hunger. More than 70 FOX 2 employees and family members volunteered Saturday at Gleaners Community Food Bank in Detroit.

"Gleaners is a remarkable organization that is involved in a remarkable cause, feeding our city's children and families in need and if our FOX 2 family is a part of that - then I want to be a part of that," said Monica Gayle.

It's all part of 21st Century FOX Impact Week - a national week of service in which we joined colleagues from all over the country - to give back to the communities  where we live and work.

"This is really about trying to give back to the community - 21st Century FOX understands that they know how important it," General Manager Mike Renda said. "This is just a part of it. Our people, it's just infectious - everybody has had a fantastic time here today."

It really was fun. We inspected and bagged up apples and had some friendly competition as we pushed each other to bag even more.

In the end, we packed more than 15,000 pounds which will help more than 13,000 of our hungry neighbors.

Volunteer power is critical to help gleaners meet their mission.

"We need to feed kids, we need to feed families we need to be impactful and it's so important that groups like yours come in. Groups like FOX 2 come in and help make a difference in people's loves across our community," Gleaners director of donor relations Bridget Brown said.

FOX 2 News works for you every day on TV, but Saturday was a day we worked as a family for our community. It's a day we won't forget.

"We've done a lot of great things for our community but I think that getting our hands into it is a gratifying thing for everybody here," Renda said.

"I'm giving back today because it's the right thing to do. Let's be honest, I mean, in these times where everybody is all about themselves, it's nice to extend ourselves to others and doing that you get some reward back and it's a really good feeling," said FOX 2's Woody Woodriffe

It was a great experience and Gleaners can use volunteers year round.  And you can donate year round, just call 855-315-FOOD for more information.
