Grilling in garage to blame for house fire that killed teen girl

A teenage girl was killed in a house fire on Monday in Warren.

Police say someone was grilling in the garage of a home in the 30 thousand block of Austin Drive, which is near the intersection of Common and Dequindre roads. Police say the garage caught fire, and that fire spread to a car and then to the home.

"It definitely started in the garage; you could see the flames from the garage," says neighbor Priscilla Lessnau. She came outside when she heard the fire sirens, and say the firetrucks on her street.

"The firemen were trying to put the fire out, and then somebody told them and pointed to them there was somebody in the basement and then they pulled somebody out of the basement," she says.

Police confirm the the 17-year-old girl was pulled from the basement. She died from smoke inhalation.

The girl was a visitor at the house. There were several other people in the home at the time. Everyone else made it out safely.
