Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich (WJBK) - Scam likely calls have made its way to Grosse Pointe Farms, but the number used has victims picking up the phone.
“I actually had my identity stolen and had someone file a fraudulent tax return in my name,” Mike Malleg said.
Mike Malleg now takes extra steps to protect his identity, even before a warning issued by the Grosse Pointe Farms Police Department.
In recent days people have been getting phone calls from someone posing as an IRS agent, the phony agent says a warrant has been issued for their arrest unless a payment is made immediately.
It’s a big scam, what makes is more interesting, the person or persons making the calls have cloned the police department’s phone number and that’s what shows up in the caller ID.
“I would probably just call the police because I think I’d be skeptical of them trying to call me,” Malleg said.
It concerns me because my dad is elderly and has dementia and he could answer the phone and would never know,” Anne Soffin said.
Investigators say police departments never call and demand payments for warrants. Police in Grosse Pointe Farms say this scam appears to be happening across the country.
If you get any phone calls like that, under no circumstance should you give out any personal information over the phone, instead hang up and call your local police department.
