Barricaded gunman situation stretches on for 14 hours as police negotiate with man in Detroit
A man has been barricaded inside a Detroit assisted living apartment for 14 hours. Police are still trying to get him to surrender.
DETROIT (FOX 2) - A man who barricaded himself in a Detroit apartment Wednesday evening after allegedly firing shots has surrendered on Thursday, 20 hours after the barricaded situation started.
The unnamed man surrendered peacefully to police around 2 p.m. after barricading himself inside Parkview Towers and Square, an assisted living facility on the city's east side. Police and crisis intervention officers were at the scene negotiating.
A woman called police just after 6 p.m. Wednesday and said the man had been firing a gun off a balcony. Just after 9 p.m., police got a hostage who was in the 12th-floor apartment with the man out of the home.
Police said the 39-year-old man has mental health issues and a long criminal history.
The complex was not evacuated, but officers secured the other floors as they worked to get the man to surrender. Police said residents were not at risk.
