Mother, daughter killed in Hazel Park house fire

A mother and her adult daughter both died in a house fire early Friday in Hazel Park. The fire chief said suspected smoke inhalation killed the women.

A mother and daughter are dead after a house fire early Friday in Hazel Park.

The fire at the house on E. Muir near Dequindre was reported around 5:30 a.m. by a person driving on Eight Mile who saw smoke coming from the area.

Hazel Park Chief Richard Story said firefighters responded to find "heavy amount of smoke and fire coming from the dwelling."

Once firefighters were able to knock the fire down enough to get inside, they found two people dead. Story said a mother and her adult daughter died from suspected smoke inhalation. Three cats were also killed.

Story said it is the city's first fatal fire in more than a decade. 

No foul play is expected. The cause is under investigation.
