High Wind Warning downgraded to Advisory; thousands left without power

Strong Winds Sunday

Wind gusts this morning could push near 50 to 60 mph! Down trees and power lines could be an issue. Although morning temps are expected in the 50s and 60s to start, expect temps to fall through the 40s and 50s during the afternoon before much colder air rolls in Monday. Snow showers are on the way on Monday morning especially north of I-696. A coating to 3" of snow are possible through the day tomorrow.

Update: By early Sunday afternoon, the High Wind Warning was canceled by the National Weather Service, replaced with a High Wind Advisory. 

Wind gusts are still in the 45 miles and hour to 50 range, while winds have been monitored whipping through Metro Detroit at speeds of up 25 to 35 miles per hour Sunday afternoon.

DTE Energy reports that 12,000 customers without service in scattered outages throughout the area. The hardest-hit area appears to be southwest Detroit, Southgate and near Saline this morning with between 500 to 1,500 residences out. According to its website, about 213 crews are in the field.

Scattered outages are also apparent in Gibraltar and Flat Rock, down into Rockwood. 

According to Consumer's Energy, there are 523 outages impacting 29,606 customers throughout the state.

The National Weather Service says winds gusts will increase in magnitude mid-morning as a powerful cold front sweeps through the region. Peak wind gusts from the west of 50 to 60 mph are likely into Sunday afternoon.

Stay at least 20 feet away from downed power lines including anything in contact with it.
