DETROIT (WJBK) - While Cinco de Mayo falls on this Saturday, you can check a variety of events from shopping to dining to dancing all week long in Southwest Detroit.
From Tuesday through Sunday, the area will host events ranging from contests with prizes, discounts and promotions by local businesses and more from one of the city's most culturally diverse communities.
Special discounts and promotions will be available at restaurants just by mentioning "Cinco Week in Southwest Detroit" to your server between Tuesday and Thursday. For a list of participating restaurants, click here.
You can visit one of 16 community murals and art pieces, take a selfie and post it to Instagram, Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag #CincoSWDet to enter to win a gift certificate from local businesses. That contest runs through 6 p.m. on Sunday with winners announced on Tuesday, May 8. To see which art pieces to visit, click here.
There will be a Taco Tour and Bar Crawl on Friday, featuring a variety of tacos, as well as specialty margaritas and imported beers. Diners can vote for their favorite tacos by taking a picture of their meal and posting it to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using #CincoSWDet. The restaurant with the most votes will earn the title of "Best Taco in Southwest Detroit." For more information, click here.
On "Shopping Saturday," customers can visit the local shops and businesses, where you can find anything from hand sewn dresses to freshly made tortillas to high-quality, brand-name furniture.
Then on Sunday, the Mexican Patriotic Committee of Metro Detroit will host the 54th Annual Cinco de Mayo Parade at 12 p.m. from Patton Park (W. Vernor Hwy and Woodmere Street) and will head east, ending at Clark Park (W. Vernor Highway and Scotten Street).
After the parade, you can head to Clark Park for the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta presented by Grahams Rainbows Blessing Hands. From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., you can enjoy live entertainment including music and dancing, family-friendly activities like a petting zoo, bouncy house and slide, and treats like snow cones and popcorn -- free of charge.
There will also be a traditional Mercado in the Northwest Pavilion, featuring handmade goods from Latin American artisans and local vendors such as Danto Furniture.
"We're excited to show off the great dining, shopping and cultural happenings in Southwest Detroit during our very first 'Cinco de Mayo Week' celebration," said West Vernor & Springwells BID Board Chair Jason Ghannam. "Our businesses are ready to roll out the red carpet to not only welcome our neighbors, but also encourage new visitors to explore the area and find the many great amenities that make our community shine."
