A vigil was held in McGinty Park Monday for David Carter.

Earlier today the person of interest who had been taken into custody by police was released in the homicide case. The investigation is still going, and the family is still grieving.

A life that ended entirely too soon. Hundreds lifted their voices in prayer and song as they gathered to remember David Carter.

They met at the McGinty Park where carter helped coach players with the Melvindale Junior Football Club. Some traveled from as far grand rapids to pay their respects.

"Oh my God, it's an amazing feeling," said Tasia Jackson, Carter's sister. "I knew my brother was loved, but I did not know it was like this."

"Whoever did this took the best of us," said Elton Carter, David's father. "And it hurts.

David Carter, 39, was reported missing last week. His partial remains were found in Ohio more than a hundred miles away from his home.

Melvindale police made an arrest Friday and had a person of interest in custody, but we've learned that person has since been released.

Justice and closure is still a way away and memories a bit nearer.

"Throwing the football with each other, working out with each other," said his son, David Carter, Jr. "Or just talking junk, playing a game. It was a lot of fun but it is going to suck not having those memories anymore. He will always be with us, always."
