I-696 construction: Eastbound between I-75 and Lahser to close for two years
OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. (FOX 2) - A major headache for southeast Michigan drivers is coming in full speed a week from Monday, as a segment of I-696 will close for two years of construction.
What they're saying:
MDOT says eastbound I-696 between Lahser and I-75 will be closed for repairs and will be under construction for two years. The construction is part of a $275 million project to rebuild the freeway.
This part of the project is expected to be the last portion of the highway to be worked on between where construction just ended and I-75.
MDOT officials say the road is in rough shape
The backstory:
The Michigan Department of Transportation announced in 2022 it planned a massive overhaul of 11 miles of I-696 from Evergreen to I-275.
It was all part of the I-75 modernization project, which was started all the way back in 2016.
MDOT said the construction was made possible by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan program to rebuild the state highways and bridges.
What's next:
Westbound I-696 will still be open, but drivers needing to go eastbound will be detoured going south on M1 Northwestern, the Lodge to the Davison M8 then back north on I-75 to get around the closure.
Detours are expected to be posted.
