(WJBK) - No trip to Ikea is complete without a visit to the cafeteria. Now shoppers in the U.S. have a new, healthier item to choose from -- the veggie hot dog.
Ikea rolled out its original veggie hot dog to one particular store in Sweden earlier this year to test it out. Approval ratings must've been great because the snack arrived at all Ikea stores in the United States about seven months later on September 25. Original reports said they weren't slated to come to the U.S. until 2019.
Their version of the hot dog is made from a mix of kale, red lentils, carrots and ginger.
"With the veggie hotdog we cater for the needs of the many people, vegan, vegetarians, flexitarians and all of those who enjoy good tasting food as well as staying true to Ingvar Kamprad´s vision and offer a quick, convenient and truly affordable product for all IKEA visitors to enjoy." Michael La Cour, Managing Director at IKEA Food Services AB, said in a news release.
The company says they're one of the biggest hot dog vendors in the world -- selling more than 100 million hot dogs every year -- and they wanted to bring the food to a wider audience. They've already developed a vegetarian version of their Swedish meatballs, too, made out of chickpeas, green peas, carrots and other veggies.
Just a heads up, though, for the vegans out there wanting to try it. Ikea Food Services says that while the sausage itself is vegan friendly, the bun may or may not be. A representative commented on Instagram that the buns used differ from market to market, so to just double check with the cafeteria before you take a bite.
