Police say a Kansas City, Kansas, detective was shot and killed, and a man who'd been sought for questioning in that incident was later wounded and arrested after a shootout with police in neighboring Missouri.
Detective Brad Lancaster, 39, was responding to a report of a suspicious person in Kansas City, Kansas, on Monday when he was shot at least twice. Police said in a statement that he later died at a hospital.
Police say the shooter, 28-year-old Curtis Ayers, fled in the detective's car, then carjacked a vehicle with two children inside before abandoning that vehicle, leaving the kids unharmed.
Ayers was ultimately taken into custody in Kansas City, Missouri, when he crashed his car after exchanging gunfire with officers.
Police say he was wounded during the gun battle and Kansas City, Missouri, police spokeswoman Amber Thomas-Hickerson says he's in stable condition at an unspecified hospital.
According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, Lancaster is the 18th officer shot and killed this year across the country.
Late Monday night, Lancaster's partnert, Stuart Dean, posted a somber goodbye to his partner and friend on Facebook.
Brad and I were partners for the last 2 years. Every morning he would fire up his coffee bean grinder (which sounded more like a gravel truck) and disrupt my morning phone calls. He spent his summers vacationing with his family in Colorado and would bug me with the details of the routes he would take through the mountains. He was a huge Royals fan and would update me with the scores of the ballgame while I was trying to type (whether I wanted him to or not). We argued on a weekly basis and he would never admit when he was wrong.
He was the best partner I ever had and was much smarter than I was. I miss him so much. Don't worry brother, we'll keep your family safe.
