Lake Orion woman killed in hit-and-run crash while bicycling across Michigan
TROY, Mich. - Susan Cummings dedicated much of her life to serving others.
She was a part of a group of bicyclists trekking across the lower peninsula Saturday to raise money for the Hope Water Project, an arm of Kensington Church in Troy. The charity builds wells in Kenya.
Cummings had just begun her journey Saturday morning at approximately 7a.m. in Montague Township, when authorities and team members say she was hit from behind by a pickup truck.
Police say she was dragged quite a distance before the driver took off. She died from massive injuries.
Word spread quickly through the trail of bikers. In an incredible show of fortitude and commitment, her teammates continued the ride.
150 miles. Nearly 10 hours.
They were able to finish by comforting and encouraging each other along the way.
Cummings brother Tom Rea tells Fox 2 she was also an avid runner who has completed many marathons for the Hope Water Project.
Her funeral service will take place at Kensington Church in Troy next Friday.
