Lincoln Park police officer, suspect both wounded in shooting are in stable condition

Lincoln Park police some in uniform and others undercover, were conducting a drug operation when they encountered the suspect.

A Lincoln Park police officer was shot in the area of Outer Drive and Fort Street Tuesday afternoon. The suspect was also wounded in the 26400 block of Outer Drive.

Police say that the officer was wounded in the leg and that the suspect is in custody, reports Dave Spencer.  The scene of the incident appears to be the former Vibra Hospital, off Outer Drive, which has been closed for the past few years.

The officer who was shot in the leg, is in stable condition, as is the suspect who are both hospitalized.  Lincoln Park police - some in uniform and others undercover - were conducting a drug operation when they encountered the suspect.

The suspect was one of the subjects of the drug operation. During that time, there was an altercation where gunfire was exchanged - it is unclear who fired first or how many shots were fired.

MSP says the man then attempted to run from police when more shots were fired and the suspect was wounded, taken into custody and hospitalized.

"Some officers were conducting a search warrant or some type of investigation," said 1st Lt. Mike Shaw, MSP. "The suspect involved in that investigation saw the narcotics - some were in uniform, some were undercover, saw them begin to run. You can see behind me, they ran across this field back here from this neighborhood.

"As he ran across (the closed hospital's parking lot) multiple officers and the suspect exchanged fire with each other, resulting in the one suspect and the one officer being struck."
Witnesses report seeing a man running and hearing two different series of gunshots at about 2 p.m. to 2:15. The suspect then hit the ground and more police units swarmed the area.

"We saw a Black male running this way and the police surrounded him and told him to stop running," said one woman who lives nearby. "And he wouldn't stop running so they shot him. And when they shot him, we were scared … we ran in the house, we didn't know what to do."

The circumstances of the officer-involved shooting are not known at this time. Stay with FOX 2 for more information as it becomes available.
