Little girl seriously injured after TV, dresser fall on her
DETROIT (WJBK) - A 5-year-old girl suffers severe injuries after a TV and dresser fall on top of her. Now her family is asking for help.
Her mother whose little girl is fighting for her life, wants to warn other parents.
"They said it was a miracle, 'Little Miss Miracle' is what hey named her at the hospital," said Dazarae Dawson. "Because they have never seen somebody with this many injuries survive before."
It may be hard to tell by looking at her sweet face, but two weeks ago 5-year-old Kendall Anderson suffered a terrible accident. It happened when her aunt, who was watching her and her baby brother at the time, stepped away to make a bottle.
Kendell tried to turn the TV on. She climbed up the dresser tried to press the DVD on and it fell back on her.
Dazarae Dawson was at work at the time when she got the frantic call from her sister. The old box TV and the 4-foot dresser it was sitting on, crushed Kendell.
An ambulance rushed the child to the hospital - where at first she was unresponsive and on life support.
"She is paralyzed on the left side, she is 100 percent deaf in left ear, her nose is broken down to her skull," Dawson said.
Kendell would spend the next 11 days in Detroit Children's Hospital of Michigan. Her mother soon learning every nerve on the left side of her face had been severed, requiring Kendell to see multiple doctors for the foreseeable future.
Dawson was forced to quit both of her jobs to be able to care for Kendell and her infant son. Unfortunately it has made it impossible for this hardworking mother to pay her bills or rent.
"It is just like what do I do, who do I turn to, who do I call," she said.
Relatives have set up a GoFundMe account hoping the generosity of others will help. In the meantime, Dawson is staying with her grandmother - keeping her babies close.
She also wants to warn other parents about the importance of securing their furniture, knowing first-hand how dangerous the outcome can be.
"I will tell parents, mount your TVs on the wall," Dawson said. "Even mount the dressers on to the wall do everything you can to protect your children, because you never know, you can never prepare yourself for something like this."
