Local mom raises money for STEM autism classes

(WJBK) - STEM/Art Exploration, a 24-week course created by mom Nina Gordon to help give her autistic son access to quality education, Gordon wants all kids who are on the spectrum to benefit.

A fundraiser at the Baltimore Gallery Saturday raised money to offset the cost of those classes. 

“We’re trying to build a community to help get these kids ready for the world because they’re brilliant you just have to unlock what their talent is. My son Charlie loves computers that’s where the whole STEM thing came from because it doesn't’t exist, there are not STEM classes for children on the spectrum which is very weird because they are very detailed and they remember everything so it seems like coding would be something they’d just pick up,” she said. 

Classes for STEM Art Exploration will be held at the Detroit Public Library. Nina also wants to open an after school resource center headed by her organization Charlie’s Journey.
