(WJBK) - A local animal rescue took a terminally ill dog named Buddy on a day of fun to check off the essentials on the pup's bucket list.
"Buddy is having the best day, he loves all of the attention," said Loren Cazan, a volunteer at A ReJoyceful Animal Rescue of Mount Clemens.
After the dog's owner of 14 years unexpectedly passed away, A ReJoyceful Animal Rescue took him in and discovered he has terminal cancer. Instead of being sad, the rescue decided to make him happy again.
"He's come out of his shell and went from a depressed dog, missing his owner and grieving that to just a happy boy that loves all the attention and just having a great time," Cazan said.
So far, Buddy's been adopted, gone for ice cream and wolfed down a kids meal at McDonald's.
"We're here to just celebrate his life and have a great time," Cazan said.
Buddy event went on a date with another dog named Kyla.
"She's playing hard to get but I think it's going somewhere," Cazan said. "He may have to propose. I may see some wedding bells in our future."
The fun outing also served as a way to draw attention to the need for forever homes for senior dogs, like Kyla, a 13-year-old mix who was surrendered to a shelter.
"Kyla is still looking for her forever home too and although Buddy has checked off getting adopted from his bucket list, she hasn't yet," Cazan said.
For those considering adopting a dog, think about helping a senior dog like Buddy enjoy his last days and a bucket list.
"Although (senior dogs) may not have as many years left as a puppy, they provide an unconditional love that is second to none," Cazan said.
