Macomb County woman sentenced to life in prison after child dies from abuse nearly 6 years later

Hilary Ulp (MDOC)

A Macomb County woman will spend the rest of her life behind bars after abuse inflicted on her then-boyfriend's baby a decade ago led to the child's death.

Hilary Ulp, 46, has been in prison since 2016 for abusing Nicolas Kuras and breaking his bones in 2015.

The backstory:

The boy was 14 months old at the time. In early 2021, felony murder charges were brought against Ulp after Kuras died at age 7.

After a six-week trial, a jury convicted Ulp of felony murder. She was sentenced to life without parole on Tuesday.

"This case is a heartbreaking reminder of the fragility of life and the devastating consequences of abuse. Our hearts go out to the victim’s family, who have endured unimaginable pain and loss over the years. We hope this sentence brings some measure of justice and healing to those who loved Nicolas," said Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido.
