Man accused of killing off-duty Port Huron cop in attack on estranged wife heading to trial
(WJBK) - A woman testified against her estranged husband in court Tuesday, who is accused of coming to her home and killing the off-duty Port Huron police officer she was with at the time and injuring her neighbor.
"Seeing your own husband run up on you and shoot you. I feel like the entire thing is traumatizing and scary," said Ashley Bauman.
Fighting tears as she recalls the terrifying moment she had been shot in the chest, Bauman testified in a Port Huron courtroom against her estranged husband.
Port Huron off-duty officer killed, 2 others shot, suspect arrested in Southfield
"He stopped and pointed his gun at me and I remember those three shots," she said.
Charged with first-degree murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder, home invasion and felony firearm, 30-year-old Joshua Bauman of Kimball Township sat and listened uring his preliminary exam, accused of attacking his estranged wife and her neighbor last month, and murdering Port Huron police lieutenant Joel Wood, who had served 23 years with the department.
"There were 2 bullet holes in his backside and then a bullet hole in the side of his head by his temple," said Steve Surman of the Saint Clair Co. Sheriff's Office.
Police say Bauman broke into his estranged wife's apartment finding the off-duty lieutenant inside.
"I seen him and Joel up against the door frame and him and Josh were both fighting over the gun," Bauman said.
Bauman then testified she ran to a neighbor's apartment across the hall for help.
"He's shooting me and ... I fell into Tims apartment," she said.
Police say her neighbor then pulled out a gun and scared away Joshua Bauman. That neighbor was shot in the knee and Lieutenant Wood was found lying dead in her bedroom.
"He said he reloaded his gun and shot Joel one more time in the head," Surman said.
The defense Tuesday questioned Ashley Bauman's memory as she testified that she and Wood had gone to a comedy club earlier that night, asking her how many drinks she had. But prosecutors reiterated that Ashley is traumatized.
"I feel like I've been under a lot of stress snf gone through a lot," she said.
Joshua Bauman is now heading to trial for murder.
