TROY, Mich. (WJBK) - A 23-year-old man from Troy was shot and killed by police after he walked towards an officer with multiple kitchen knives. Police said this is the fourth time they've been called to the home in less than a year.
The department says a man armed with knives was shot in a neighborhood near John R and Long Lake roads. Troy Police Lt. Josh Jones said, despite immediate revival efforts, the man died.
Officers were dispatched to the 4900 block of Saddle Brook Court just before 7:30 a.m. for a domestic disturbance. They were told a family member was being aggressive and had armed himself with multiple knives.
Officers responded in one marked vehicle and an unmarked car. We're told when the man saw the marked police car, he went running towards the officers with the knives.
Police hit him with a Taser, which we're told was ineffective, and the man continued running towards the officers. Multiple shots were fired and the man was hit. It's not known yet how many times he was hit.
The man was taken the hospital after revival efforts were made on scene, and was eventually pronounced dead.
"Tasers are effective tools but don't always work; that's why its important for officers to have multiple tools, multiple ways, to address threats," said Troy Police Lt. Josh Jones. Jones said the man had two knives on him.
Police are not yet releasing the name of the man, to give time for family to be notified, but say he is in his early 20s.
Jones said later Monday morning police have responded to that address three times since July 2017. Jones said indications from the family and from their previous runs indicate the individual was not mentally stable.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office is assisting in the investigation. Jones said this is the first officer-involved shooting for the department in more than 20 years. The officers involved will be on administrative leave during the investigation.
