Man killed in M-53 crash that left both directions closed for hours

A two car accident caused M-53 to be closed in both directions Friday afternoon.

A Ford Explorer driven by a 44-year-old Capac man was going southbound before crossing the center median and struck a white Chevrolet Malibu, killing its driver, a 37-year-old Memphis man.

The 37-year-old was declared dead at the scene. The driver of the Explorer was hospitalized with serious injuries.

M-53 reopened at 8 p.m. tonight although the investigation into the crash continues. It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident.
