STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (WJBK) - Sterling Heights Police are looking for a man who pistol whipped a homeowner before stealing his vehicle.
It happened when the man came home from work early Sunday morning at a home on Acorn Lane, which is near Mound Road and M-59. He was taking his dog outside when he was approached by an armed man.
The suspect ordered the victim back into his home and hit him in the face with the handle of his revolver. The suspect then grabbed a pillow case, and proceeded to steal numerous items from the home, which included jewelry and the victim's cell phone.
The victim, a CPL holder, ran and retrieved his handgun from his closet and started to fire multiple shots at the suspect, who was driving off with the victim’s car.
Neighbors say they're still processing what happened.
"Gunfire in this neighborhood is really strange," one neighbor tells us.
"We didn't know what to think. When we came back a couple hours later there were two crime scene investigator cars here, and they were kind of combing the lawn, and as I started to talk to people I heard they were looking for shell casings," says neighbor Ray Houthuysen.
The Jeep was located and recovered unoccupied, not far from the scene of the incident. It is unknown at this time if the suspect was hit by any of the shots fired at him. The suspect has not yet been caught.
Police say they haven't found an image of suspect or the stolen vehicle on any nearby surveillance video, and the homeowner couldn't provide a detailed description of the suspect.
The Sterling Heights Detective Bureau is investigating this incident, and if anyone from the public has information on the suspect they are encouraged to contact the Sterling Heights Police Department at 586-446-2825.
