WEB UPDATE (5-15): The suspect, Alexander Mims, turned himself in 1 day after this segment aired.

Detroit Police are asking for the public's help tracking down an armed robbery suspect months after he's been on the run.

Police are looking for 20-year-old Alexander Mims after a robbery and shooting that happened February 19, 2018 on the city's northeast side.

Police say the victim, a 25-year-old man, drove to meet a friend at a vacant home in the 17400 block of Sunset Street, which is near E McNichols and Ryan roads. Police say when the victim pulled up, he was ambushed by Mims who was likely hiding behind a privacy fence along the driveway.

When the victim pulled up in his car, police say that's when Mims opened the back passenger side door and tried to rob him.

"Struck him four times, grazing head wound and three rounds to the body. So, as that happened, Mr. Mims was shot by our victim," says Detroit Police Lt. Ian Severy.

Despite the multiple gunshot wounds, the victim somehow drove away to get help.

"Our victim, trying to find help, drove by a party store. Ended up at Seven Mile and Ryan at a gas station where he was able to get someone to call 911 for him," Lt. Severy says.

After the shooting, Mims arrived at Providence Hospital in Southfield.

"Our perpetrator proceeded to go to the hospital two days later outside of the immediate area where the incident happened and fabricated a story that he had been robbed on the west side of the city. No facts or evidence were ever produced to verify his claims," Severy says.

By the time police put the pieces together Mims was gone, checked out of the hospital.

In the meantime, police haven't had any luck getting information from any witnesses. Only one street light is near where the crime happened, and it was also dark back in February that time of night.

Police say they know Mims is often in the Greenfield Corridor area near Seven Mile Road, mostly in the northwest side of the city.

Mims is 20 years old. He's 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 155 lbs. He has brown eyes and may be wearing cornrows. He also has a tattoo on his right arm that says B.M.G., and it has the outline of guns on it.

If you see Mims or have any information about what happened, you're asked to contact Detroit Police.
