Man suspected in shooting transgender woman arraigned

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Deonton Rogers in connection with the non-fatal shooting of a 29-year-old transgender woman. 

The shooting happened at a Detroit gas station, when Rogers allegedly approached the victim and made a lewd remark to her. When he was informed by the victim that she was a transgender woman he started a verbal argument about her sexual orientation. 

After pulling a gun from his waistband, Rogers and the victim struggled over the gun resulting in the victim being shot in the shoulder. 

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Investigation by the Detroit police led to the arrest of Rogers on Friday, 

He has been charged with Firearm Discharge - Serious Impairment/Injury, Felonious Assault, Felony Firearm, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Child Abuse -4th Degree and Ethnic Intimidation based upon gender.
