Man's fatal shooting of self inside car outside dispensary appears accidental: Police

Around 11 a.m. Friday, Hamtramck police responded to a parking lot in the area of Saint Aubin and Caniff where a shooting had just taken place.

A 66-year-old man taking his gun out of his holster while in his car in the parking of a Hamtramck marijuana dispensary when he shot himself and died from his injuries, police say.

Hamtramck Police said around 11 a.m. on Friday, they were called to a report of a shooting at Quality Roots, a marijuana dispensary near Caniff and Saint Aubin Streets.

Police said the 66-year-old man was sitting in his car and they believe he was taking his gun out of his holster when he mistakenly shot himself in the upper leg. He was dead when police arrived at the dispensary.

Police released a statement saying, "It appears that the victim may have accidentally discharged the weapon as he was removing it from the holster, striking himself in the upper leg. The investigation is ongoing."

As the police investigation got underway this business was shut down for a period of time causing customers to be turned away.

The CEO of Quality Roots, Aric Klar, said in a statement: "Our condolences to the family. The community and our customers know safety comes first. We are happy to work with the police as they wrap up their investigations."

The dispensary reopened at 3 p.m., while police have not released the name of the victim at this time.
