Shots fired at Detroit police - Chief James Craig called it an ambush.

Released images show the alleged gunman fleeing the scene and the car believed to be involved. Thankfully police were not hurt, but tonight they're desperate to track these bad guys down.

A marked car was on patrol when someone pointed a gun at them and opened fire.

"As they got in view of this street they could see it was a suspect armed with what appeared to be an assault type rifle," Craig said. "They knew these were Detroit police officers. The police car was marked."

Police shared images from surveillance cameras from a nearby business of a man who Craig says fired eight to 10 shots directly at a police cruiser Wednesday morning in the area of Eight Mile and John R.

A gun was eventually found at a nearby home and taken into evidence. Luckily, none of the shots hit the intended target.

"The officers quickly accelerated eastbound out of the field of fire," Craig said.

But the bullets did hit a parked SUV which police towed from the scene as evidence. Police also said they are looking for an older model silver four-door Chrysler seen in photos released by DPD.

The officers weren't responding to any call for help and were just on patrol in an area known for drug activity.

"There is a rift between two opposing drug gangs in this block between two drug gangs if you will," Craig said. "We don't know if the initial gunshots were targeted at a drug house on this block or not."

Police say two other men were also with the shooter and are also wanted by police.  Even with police dogs, helicopters and a full scale search they were unable to find the shooter.

The area is known to police for another reason as well. Just a block from the shooting is where police found graffiti threatening the life of Chief Craig. However, police don't believe it is related in any way.

Police wrapped up the door to door search around 2:30 and are hopeful someone will recognize the man and the car seen in the photos.
