A three-person panel has been working to find a replacement for long-time Wayne County Treasurer Raymond Wojtowicz, who  announced in September that he would retire before the completion of his term in 2016.

The 86-year-old Wojtowicz has held the position since 1976 and announced in September that he would retire this year.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett and Wayne County Chief Probate Judge Freddie Burton Jr. invited interested candidates to apply for the position.

Eight candidates applied and were granted interviews, but state Sen. Bert Johnson,  a Highland Park Democrat, dropped out Friday. The panel will interview the remaining candidates Monday and Wednesday.

M.L. Elrick did some digging into the candidates and looked into the good, the bad and the financially ugly.
