Metro Detroit car thefts and break-ins on the rise, says police

Bloomfield Township police are telling drivers to lock their vehicles, as according to officials, auto thefts and larceny are skyrocketing in not just the area, but across Metro Detroit.

"The clear message is you need to lock your car and take your valuables out," said Heather Glowacz of the Bloomfield Township Police. "In October, we had no stolen vehicles and only three cars that were gone into."

Police then say there were 27 total cars that were gone or had items taken in December. Meanwhile, there were ten vehicles stolen that were unlocked with the keys inside and another vehicle that was stolen that was locked.

Officials say they are taking everything, and it could cost you thousands of dollars in damages.

Glowacz says it was happening in neighboring cities too, including Huntington Woods, Beverly Hills, and Birmingham.

"Unfortunately, I think in the more affluent areas that people get a false sense of security because they do live in nice areas, right? A lot of people have home security systems and private security and all of that," she said.

Many investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, Glowacz says it is unknown if there is one person behind the activity or a group of people.
