ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (WJBK) - Brownie and Sissy are ready for a fresh start in metro Detroit -- a long away from Greenville, South Carolina.
They are just a few of the shelter dogs that the Michigan Humane Society picked up from shelters right before Hurricane Florence hit. The goal is to free up space for dogs and cats that would be displaced as a result of the hurricane.
"So what we did we collaborated with the Humane Society of the United States, they had set up a staging area west of the hurricane zone and that allowed may different animal rescues like us to go in and evacuate as many as we could," said Shaun Bailey with the Michigan Humane Society.
Altogether, 22 dogs were brought from South Carolina to metro Detroit and some of them have already been adopted.
Brownie and Sissy are ready for new homes now and the humane society says more rescue dogs from South Carolina will be available in the days to come.
"In this case all the animals were originally homeless," Bailey said. "Here we will find them homes. But we have also done this before, in the case of Houston earlier this year. We do it in the hopes of were there a disaster here, other animal welfare organizations would return the favor."
