Michigan state park campground rates increasing this summer
(FOX 2) - Your camping trip could cost a bit more after a rate increase for Michigan state park campgrounds goes into effect later this year.
According to the Department of Natural Resources, it's the first rate increase in three years.
Campground rate increase
Timeline:
The nightly rate increases are slated to go into effect for stays beginning on Aug. 1 and beyond.
Campsites and lodging can be booked up to six months in advance, meaning that this weekend, campers can start booking sites under the new rates.
By the numbers:
State park modern and semi-modern campsites will increase between $4 and $10 per night, depending on the location and available amenities, such as electricity.
The cost of overnight lodging, including cabins and yurts, will range from $60 to $120 per night.
Deluxe lodging will be $160 per night.
Modern lodges will undergo a phased increase, capping at $236 per night.
In addition to the nightly rates, lodging in campgrounds that have 85% occupancy rates will also include a 7.5% fee.
The backstory:
The Michigan State Park Advisory Committee approved the rate increases last summer.
According to the DNR, market analysis of other campgrounds was used to determine the new prices.
The DNR said the increased revenue will be used to improve customer service, provide cleaner parks and bathrooms, and upgrade amenities. The money will also be used toward natural resource stewardship efforts.
