Michigan State Police troopers' home destroyed in fire over the weekend

They're used to helping others in times of crisis, and now a pair of Michigan State Troopers are on the other side of that.

It comes after a fire ripped through their home in Harper Woods over the weekend where not much was left after a 3 a.m. fire on Saturday morning.

"When I opened up the door and looked out, you can see the flames across the other houses," said David Shipman. "So yeah, real bad."

Just the remaining ashes, broken bricks, no roofing, one little tiny bit of Christmas left- but not much more.

"Just totaled. Yeah, it's through the roof. I mean, just Sunday morning, the alarm, the smoke alarm was still going off," Shipman said.

A mother and her three adult children lived here and if the story stopped there, it would be so tragic for the family just before the holidays. But this family was special. Two of the children were Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers.

"I had my drone got stuck in a tree, and Willie climbed the tree and got my drone down," Shipman said. "I couldn’t say nothing bad about them. Nothing bad about them."

Javan Coleman and Willie Coleman, both brothers and state troopers, now with no place to go. A trooper colleague set up a GoFundMe account to help the family start to rebuild the home and replace the contents of the house.

Despite the devastation, nobody was hurt in the fire.
