Mom who filed civil suit against Detroit judge now accused of beating 71-year-old aunt
Mom accused of beating 71-year-old aunt while drunk, also filed civil suit against Detroit judge
Latoreya Till is accused of beating up her 71-year-old aunt while she was drunk and was charged with assault in court on Friday. She had been on FOX 2 before in August, after filing a civil suit with Fieger Law against 36th District Court Judge Kenneth King.
DETROIT (FOX 2) - It was a twist in the story of a controversial decision made by a local judge who had a teen girl handcuffed for contempt of court while on a field trip back in August.
Judge Kenneth King faces a civil suit filed by the teen’s mom, who now finds herself in some trouble in court on Friday.
"This defendant doesn’t have any priors but, you’re absolutely right, and the 71-year-old was allegedly her aunt and the defendant was drunk and beating up on her," said Steve Vincent from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
Latoreya Till is accused of beating up her 71-year-old aunt while she was drunk and was charged with assault in court on Friday.
She had been on FOX 2 before, in August, after filing a civil suit with Fieger Law against 36th District Court Judge Kenneth King.
"Basically, I just want Judge King to take accountability for the way he humiliated my daughter," said Latoreya Till back in August.
Why did she file the civil suit against Judge King?
Her 16-year-old daughter Eva was on a field trip in King’s court last August when he held her in contempt for falling asleep multiple times and waking up with an attitude, mocking him.
It spiraled from there.
"She just doesn’t give a care. I’m tempted to give her some days in jail as a lesson," said the judge back in August.
The judge ordered her into handcuffs and made her change into a jail uniform and stand in front of her classmates, with no intent to ever send her to jail. Till is now seeking monetary damages on behalf of her daughter.
"It’s been devastating. Eva doesn’t want to come outside," said Latoreya.
What's next in the case?
Judge King is back on the bench and had to undergo sensitivity training. The civil case moves forward, and his attorney, Todd Perkins, is reacting to this latest twist with those assault charges against Till.
"I would never want anyone to be in the crosshairs of the legal system," said attorney Todd Perkins.
Perkins says they’re monitoring her case closely but not rushing to judgment.
"That’s what people did to Judge King, and they impugned his character when he was doing something that his robe, his position allows him to do," said Perkins. "The court proceeding had stopped, but they were in a courtroom. He was still on the bench. He’s still Judge King for the purposes of all ambit of time for which we are dealing with this,"
As far as defending King, Perkins says he acted within his power that day last August. Perkins filed a motion to have the civil suit dismissed.
That request will be heard by a judge in February.
