A 33-year-old mother is formally charged in the death of her one year old daughter killed in a house fire.
But one family member is calling the charges too harsh for the woman who's already suffered enough.
Shevonne Watkins was charged with involuntary manslaughter and child abuse in the death of her 1-year-old daughter Malaya.
She was killed in a house fire after Watkins allegedly left the baby and her 3-year-old brother alone at their home in Romulus at the end of October.
Cheryl Watkins is now caring for her daughter's 3-year-old son who survived the fire as well as her 9-year-old. The grandmother admits her daughter made a mistake.
"She does not deserve any type of murder charge," said Cheryl Watkins. "My daughter has suffered enough - she knows that she made a really dumb choice to leave her kids at home alone."
Shevonne Watkins was initially taken into custody then released pending further investigation.
Now it's alleged she failed to provide supervision and a safe place to live and that she failed to turn herself in on Saturday. But she says she wanted to wait until Monday, she wanted to spend more time with her children
And she says she was scared.
"Well I understand you're scared, ma'am," the judge said. "It is a very serious matter and it's a horrible thing quite frankly, that you've been through as well."
Police wanted bond set at $100,000. The judge said she had to come up with $1,000 to be released on bond.
Her mother said she is getting out so she can spend Christmas with her kids.
"She does know that she has to be responsible for the repercussions of leaving her children at home alone," Cheryl Watkins said. "But she does not deserve a murder charge.
"She may have lost everything but she still has the love of her family. I'm her mother and I’m going to stand by her to the end."
