A 49-year old Detroit man is in very critical condition after a near-deadly crash on eastbound 696 near i-75.

State police say the man lost control of the motorcycle he was riding and struck a semi truck rolling underneath it. Troopers initially thought the man died,  but later learned he was taken to a local hospital.

The truck driver left the scene. State police say it's likely he was unaware of the collision.

It all happened around 6:15 Tuesday evening causing a miles long back up on the partially open freeway in the middle of rush hour.

"It was about 7 p.m. when I got on the freeway and it was backed up all the way from probably Northwestern Highway," said Charlotte Hubert, adding it took two hours for her to get home on I-696.

State police say witnesses provided a description of the semi truck to investigators. Troopers located the truck and the driver at the Mopar Chrysler distribution center in centerline.

He is cooperating with police.

State police said that the motorcyclist was at fault but that the truck driver could also be ticketed.
