The popular Anchor Bar will soon have a new owner at the helm for the first time in 60 years.
Inside the downtown Detroit bar, literally decades of memories are on its walls.
"You hear about places that have been in business for 20 to 30 years and then something changes and they can't keep up with things," said Vaughn Derderian. "They go out of business and it's a sad story. This is, I think, a great story."
Manager of the legendary Anchor Bar on Fort Street, Vaughn Derderian says it's time for a change. The bar's owner, his father, is selling the place. The offer came as quite a surprise as negotiations were underway for the last few months.
"It's a good opportunity I think for us to take a step back, and for my dad to spend time retiring," Derderian said.
Detroit developer and president of The Elia Group, Zaid Elia bought the bar but promised to keep what employees and customers love, the same.
"They've assured us everything is going to stay the same," said employee Catherine Vitoratos. "It is going to be the same atmosphere. We are just looking forward to see what new things they are going to bring in."
Elia says only minor changes will be made like updating utilities, adding that he plans to find creative ways to accentuate moments the bar has played in the city's history.
Elia even planning to add quotes and stories from the Derderian family to the walls - already filled with photos of journalists, athletes, celebrities and customers.
"There's a picture right there of me and my family with the Stanley Cup," said Derderian. "That's from 2010."
We are told even the menu will pretty much stay the same, although some items will stay.
The dedicated staff, many of them who have worked there for years, are happily staying.
"This is still going to be the center of a community for decades to come," Derderian said.
The deal is set to close in late September.
"There's a lot of history here," said employee Jarena Gray. "It's going to be the same old Anchor Bar."
