Oakland Christian School students collecting socks for Hurricane Harvey victims

(WJBK) - Local elementary students have been busy collecting donations to send to the victims of Harvey.

The recent disasters that have ravaged parts of our country leads to are hard lessons to learn at a young age.

"Something can be taken away in a split second and that we need to help out and be kind," said 6th grader Emily Clow.

That was the reaction Emily had after watching Hurricane Harvey on the news.

"People's houses were getting destroyed and they weren't going to be able to get anything because it came in so fast and stayed there for days," Emily said.

So she decided to do something about it, approaching her principal at Oakland Christian School to see what can be done to help.
 
Together they found school kids in Vider, Texas that need help.

"The schools in that school district, 3 out of 5 of them were flooded," she said.

"We don't want our students to look in at themselves only. We want them to see the needs of others and so this just fits naturally with that," said Principal Gordon Nickel.

Speaking of a good fit, the nature of the donations being collected are somewhat unexpected and very specific.

"Not a lot of people think of socks and socks would be a thing that they would need. They wouldn't want to go barefoot," Emily said.

"They are going to like them when they get them," 4th grader Anna Clow.

This is a total student driven effort and donations are starting to pile up..

But some logistics are still being worked out between the schools.

"Getting it down there will be the next challenge," Nickel said.

A bin will be located outside the school for anyone that wants to donate socks - they are continuing this drive for another week.
