Off-duty Detroit Police officer killed in crash, person of interest identified

An off-duty Detroit Police officer was killed in a hit-and-run crash on the city's east side.

"Earlier this morning, the City of Detroit lost one of Detroit's finest," said Detroit Police Interim Chief Todd Bettison. "He was a good officer. A fine officer who served with distinction."

Officer Cameron Richardson was on the job for just over one year. Detroit Police describe him as a family man with two daughters and a military veteran.

"We will never forget him," said Interim Chief Bettison. "We're going to wrap our arms totally around this family."

According to DPD, Officer Richardson was heading home from work, traveling northbound on Hoover at Greiner. Witnesses said a white van attempted to take a left turn and turned in front of the Jeep.

Detroit Police responded shortly after midnight. Officers arrived at the scene and found a Jeep Wrangler rolled over in a crash. The other involved vehicle had left the scene.

"I want to thank Michigan State Police who also responded to assist. MSP's Trooper 2 was able to locate that white van a short distance away from the accident," said Interim Chief Bettison.

Detroit Police have identified a 28-year-old man as a person of interest. Police say the other occupants of the vehicle were detained.

"We have worked tirelessly since the incident occurred. We've executed search warrants. We have identified individuals who were in that white van. We know who the driver is. We are asking the driver to turn themselves in," said Interim Chief Bettison.

A GoFundMe for the family was started Sunday.
